This song was used for a TV commercial in the UK in the 80's. I think it was for a department store.
Does anyone have a link to a copy of that? It's one of the most iconic memories of my childhood.

the "off-ness" of the lyrics and beat both enchant and annoy in equal measure. 😐 SO 80s!

This here defines "new wave" for me - trebly guitar, odd vocals, and a drum sound that would horrify rock purists but totally works in this instance

@Andy JS well if not new wave then definitely post punk

For me it has to have some synths in it to qualify as real New Wave.

I remember this when in final year of high school — we had a term for these bands back then “art school punk/new wave” — all one-liner concept & loads of eyeliner— yet not enough substance to produce another catchy song ;other than their fluke 1st hit).

Meanwhile ... don’t forget the song dates back to 1959 (so these guys didn’t even write this, it’s a regurgitation) ...

The backstory of "Money (That's What I Want)" = a song written by Tamla founder Berry Gordy & Janie Bradford — became the 1st hit record for Gordy's Motown enterprise. Recorded in 1959 by Barrett Strong for the Tamla label, distributed nationally on Anna Records.

And don’t forget about the Beatles awesome cover version — beautifully done.

I think this “new wave/art school” conceptual version was a poignant flash moment for the time - but it’s highly pretentious to give too much credence (& credit) to these people ... I find it artistically lazy — an easy cash grab for unimaginative trust fund babies who have envy for their more talented peers.
