And you may find yourself Living in a shotgun shack And you may find yourself In another part of the world And you may find yourself Behind the wheel of a large automobile And you may find yourself in a beautiful house With a beautiful wife And you may ask yourself, well How did I get here? Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down Letting the days go by, water flowing underground Into the blue again after the money's gone Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground And you may ask yourself How do I work this? And you may ask yourself Where is that large automobile? And you may tell yourself This is not my beautiful house! And you may tell yourself This is not my beautiful wife! Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down Letting the days go by, water flowing underground Into the blue again after the money's gone Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground Same as it ever was Same as it ever was Same as it ever was Same as it ever was Same as it ever was Same as it ever was Same as it ever was Same as it ever was Water dissolving and water removing There is water at the bottom of the ocean Under the water, carry the water Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean! Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down Letting the days go by, water flowing underground Into the blue again in the silent water Under the rocks, and stones there is water underground Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down Letting the days go by, water flowing underground Into the blue again after the money's gone Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground And you may ask yourself What is that beautiful house? And you may ask yourself Where does that highway go to? And you may ask yourself Am I right? Am I wrong? And you may say yourself, "My God! What have I done?" Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down Letting the days go by, water flowing underground Into the blue again in to the silent water Under the rocks and stones, there is water underground Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down Letting the days go by, water flowing underground Into the blue again after the money's gone Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground Same as it ever was Same as it ever was Same as it ever was Look where my hand was Time isn't holding up Time isn't after us Same as it ever was Same as it ever was Same as it ever was Same as it ever was Same as it ever was Same as it ever was Same as it ever was Same as it ever was Same as it ever was Letting the days go by (same as it ever was) Letting the days go by (same as it ever was) Once in a lifetime Letting the days go by Letting the days go by

It's a song of life.... It's not about anything other than the average persons life..... There's children to raise n bills to pay. Before you know it years have gone bye. We do what has to be done but in the end it's these things that hold us up & get us thru... There's never going to be another decade of music like the 80's. Most don't know it but these guys started in the 70's.... A big thanks this will always be in my heart & play list!

Great post Brian.. The song is epic, the lyric, depth and meaning reach a higher level of understanding. We all have those moments where we realize that we are realizing. We self-reflect, step out of the river of our thinking to realize we are in a river. The 80's were the best generation of music. There is a whole world of artists that still make modern day music that reflects the influences of these types of artists. David Byrne was truly an artist, I hope people realize that.

The song is how life ends the same way, whether you live in a shotgun shack or drive a large automobile. We all have to grovel, work hard, sweat. But we get to rest, be happy and love. Then the water overcomes us all in the end

The raw genius of Mr Byrne and his associates. Good music, combined with provocative poetry, plus subservient lyrics. Added to this cocktail of multi-media, a splashing of bizarre but unforgettable perambulating dance moves and close facial expressions that alarm the viewer. We are alarmed because we see emotional upheaval and are programmed to respond to facial non verbal cues. Genius Herr Byrne.
Roland Bryce
Roland Bryce 답글
Mad Frank: you are absolutely correct: everyone sees and evaluates things in a subjective way. Thank you for your subjective evaluation.
MadFranko008
MadFranko008 답글
@ Roland Bryce: Nope, as said I've watched this video for decades now and as said not once in the countless times I have watched have I ever even remotely felt "alarmed" by it, not by the lyrics nor by the facial expressions...

As you say what we each perceive from a video may not align with what other people perceive, which is my point about your initial post where you tried to claim that we ALL are alarmed by it and to wit you have now just contradicted yourself...

It's NEVER wise to make a statement where you base all others feelings and perceptions solely on your own, simply because we ALL perceive, see and feel different things and while some may perceive the same as ourself not all do of course... ;-)

Tis like anything in life we each make of it our own and generalising things such as music and visuals is just like observing a painting, we don't all see the same thing even though we are all looking at the same thing... ;-)
Roland Bryce
Roland Bryce 답글
Well, Mad Frank, you may have missed the visual clips where we have a close-up of the actor’s face and he looks alarmed, or perhaps surprised? In a non verbal way, his alarm or surprise ( or, perhaps you perceive these expressions as ‘happiness or glee’? must illicit some kind of involuntary response from the viewer, i. e. you and me. Whatever it is that you perceive, it may not align with other people. That is what makes every timeline of life unique. Enjoy the song and its great vid. 👍
MadFranko008
MadFranko008 답글
@ Roland Bryce: In all the decades of watching this great video from my very first viewing right up till this one I can assure you I have never once felt "Alarmed" by it in the slightest !!!

Not quite sure why you think people would be "Alarmed" by it but you are the only one in all these years I've ever heard claim to be so !!!

And you may find yourself
Living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself
In another part of the world
And you may find yourself
Behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house
With a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, well
How did I get here?

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself

There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Under the water, carry the water
Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean!

Into the blue again in the silent water
Under the rocks, and stones there is water underground

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

And you may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
And you may ask yourself
Where does that highway go to?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right? Am I wrong?
And you may say yourself, "My God! What have I done?"

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again in to the silent water
Under the rocks and stones, there is water underground

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground
